In 2022, 4,500 youth participated in 31 events throughout 11 countries across Canada, the Caribbean and the United States.

In Toronto, Masai Ujiri visited Canada’s only Africentric Alternative School to celebrate the day and reinforce the importance of youth education and empowerment.

The second year of the campaign grew to 14 participating cities in 7 countries, from Canada to South Africa.  Over 1,100 youth participated in basketball camps, clinics and educational workshops, celebrating the power of education and its impact on the leaders of tomorrow.

Our first International Day of the African Child saw celebrations in 6 cities across 8 countries, touching the lives of 290 youth.

As June 16, 2020 came during the biggest social justice movement of this generation, the program theme, ‘Love has no colour’ spread the message of love, humanity and equality for all.

The fourth annual event honoured Nelson Mandela with a discussion about sports, leadership, community, freedom and our future. Panel participants shared how they plan to continue Nelson Mandela’s legacy, and use the power of sport to change the world.

Following the breakfast reception, Giants of Africa visited MLSE Launchpad to spend the afternoon with 50 youth, sharing life skills lessons and conducting a mock GOA camp.

For the second year in a row, students of La Loche visited Toronto for another chance to explore the city and gain new insights and knowledge, all capped by an unforgettable night at a Raptors game.

La Loche welcomed the GOA team with open arms. Dene High School was filled with smiles as we went through fundamentals, footwork, goal setting and games.
At the end of the second day, closing ceremonies were extra special as the community thanked us with smoke tan moose hide mitts and Dene Strong caribbeaners, to remind us that we’ll always be connected. In Dene, they don’t have a word for goodbye so from the GOA team to La Loche, see you soon!

The La Loche students experienced two full days in Toronto, including a trip to George Brown College for a culinary lesson, and a visit to Ryerson University for the Truth and Reconciliation Community Consultation Report presentation as well as a chance to do some experiments at the Science Discovery Zone! A visit to the CN Tower and Ripley’s Aquarium were not to be missed, followed by a VIP experience at the Raptors vs Lakers game to culminate the trip.
