“Two years ago today bullets ripped through Dene High School in La Loche, Saskatchewan. 4 people were killed. 7 injured. There was a particular photo on the front page of the Globe and Mail that gripped me. It showed what was described as a forgiveness circle. After suffering such staggering loss they were holding the ceremony as part of their healing process. When I spotted a student in the circle wearing a Toronto Raptors’ cap I knew I had to do something. I contacted Raptors’ President Masai Ujiri not knowing if he would even respond. He not only answered —he took action. It was a life-changing phone call. Masai and I went to La Loche and visited the students and staff at Dene High School. This led to us hosting a group of students in Toronto. Prior to the group’s arrival I had written a letter to the PMO who scheduled a private meeting with the students who were able to discuss their concerns and share their stories with the Prime Minister. In a couple of days we’ll do it again as a group of 19 from La Loche visits Toronto. I can’t wait”. – Marci, co-host of GOA La Loche visits.
